A New Hazard In The Home

Heating tools usually make our lives much easier — a few strokes of a flat iron or twists of a curling iron and your desired look is achieved. But special care needs to be taken when playing with fire. Did you leave your curling or straightening iron plugged in? Make sure to have a conversation with your children about never grabbing hair appliances that may still be hot after use, even when it’s not plugged in anymore. Being vigilant in applying general safety rules when using hazardous appliances at home could be all the difference between a small contact burn and full thickness burn (third degree burn).

Hair curling and straightening irons are a commonplace household appliance. They are designed to heat up rapidly to temperatures of 180°C – 220°C. But, they also take some time to cool down once the electricity supply has been turned off.

In just 1 second an accidental contact burn with an uncoated metal surface is 70°C. This rises to 86°C for a ceramic surface. Young children are not only at great risk of severe injury through contact with a hot surface, but are unaware of the risk on approach and are further disadvantaged by their natural curiosity. You’ll be glad to know that Burnshield is safe for use on children and facial burns.

So for those rare moments when you happen to accidentally burn yourself on your face while using a hair appliance – don’t waste time – get out the Burnshield. It cools the burn! As soon as you cool down the burn, it stops it from going deeper. This can mean preventing a first-degree burn from turning into a second-degree burn. What’s the difference between the two? A first degree means redness, while a second degree means broken skin and blistering. If you think you have a second or even third-degree burn, seek medical attention. Never apply ice directly to the burn, as that can freeze the skin. So what can you do?

1. Apply Burnshield. Always have Burnshield on hand to treat a burn. When Burnshield is applied – preferably as soon as possible after the burn – it has the tremendous ability to absorb and dissipate heat, providing relief, minimising shock and damage, halting the burn process, and physically protects against further contamination. Burnshield’s cooling and soothing effect results from it’s specifically formulated Hydrogel which is non-toxic and non-irritant.

2. Keep your hands off. Whatever you do, do NOT pick at it or peel it. That skin is a protective layer. If you take it off, it is more likely to scar.

3. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Always keep your burn moist. Moisture means that your skin will be less likely to scar.

4. Hold the makeup. Chances are you probably won’t be thrilled with the giant red mark on your face, but it really is best to skip the concealer until the scab has healed.

5. Sun smart. Because burned skin is very sensitive, make sure you apply sunscreen. But don’t forget to put the product all over your face, not just on the burn, or you run the risk of discolouration. Besides, you should be wearing sunscreen all over every day anyway. Now you know!
